After building an engaged social media following, Ffion launched her brand, Some Things In Life, featuring a single product to over £1,000 in sales in the first month.
Passionate about the intersection of minimalism and sustainability, Ffion had an idea for a new kind of reusable straw that she wanted to share with the world. But without any experience in creating a product or selling online, she felt unsure where to go next.

This first month of business for first-time entrepreneurs is often a quiet one and business builds slowly. But after generating hype through her online community, Some Things In Life brought in over £1,000 in sales of Ffion’s £15 straws.

Less than a year ago, while on a break between jobs and traveling through Southeast Asia, an idea dawned on Ffion.
What if she combined her love of minimalist, life-hack products with her passion for sustainability, to create a reusable straw that was as convenient as it was ethical? With the goal to “make sustainability as effortless as possible” in mind, Ffion set out to create a product that customers would actually use.
In Ffion’s opinion, the greatest flaw in most reusable straws was that they weren’t one size fits all. So she decided to design a chic extendable straw that looked as natural in a martini glass as it did in a soda.
But with no previous experience in e-commerce, Ffion didn’t know what to do next. She knew she wanted to do more than just sell a product. She wanted to build a lasting, recognizable brand that made an impact, and she recognized that, in order to do that, she was going to need some extra training.
So she browsed the internet in search of the perfect resource to get her started, and when she found Start & Scale, she knew she’d found the answer to her prayers.
She devoured the content on branding and building an audience, learning how to interact with her community on Instagram in an effective way that would generate future sales.
Ffion says that, before Start & Scale, her sustainability brand, Some Things In Life, had 2,000 intrigued followers on Instagram. Three months after enrolling in the course, she has over 8,000.
And these interested customers-to-be showed up on launch day. With no paid advertising at all, Some Things In Life, brought in over £1,000 in sales of her £15 extendable straws in the first month alone.
“I never thought that was going to happen. I genuinely thought I was going to be cold calling my family!”
Before she took the course, she had no idea how to speak with influencers, but since the course, she’s signed up over 100 influencers to promote the product. She’s also been generating offline interest for the product with bulk orders coming in from cocktail bars.
But despite the love she has for the knowledge she gathered on branding, influencer marketing and social media, Ffion says that the Facebook community is what brought her the most value.
“The best thing is not even the course — the course is great, but it’s not the course that I think sells it. It’s the fact that there are thousands and thousands of people on the Facebook group doing exactly the same thing.”
She says the members of the community encourage her in her successes, inspire her when she needs a boost and share insight when she has questions.
With these significant wins and an encouraging community behind her to boost her confidence, Ffion plans to create more sustainable products through her growing brand, and she can’t wait to watch her business flourish.
